Top Ten Tuesday #5
Happy Tuesday, book fam!
As many of y’all know, I was a bridesmaid in a gorgeous wedding that took place over the weekend. The past few days have been full of laughs, love, speeches, tears from joy and various emotions, dancing, and — unfortunately — very little reading. But when two of your favorite people decide to say, “I do” you willingly make sacrifices.
Please forgive the quality of the photos, they’re mostly screenshots from my Snap feed.
Now that my bridesmaid’s duties are fulfilled, it’s time to get serious and hit the books. In addition to the 4 ARCs I need to read/review, I also need to respond to 2 tags, 2 awards (thanks again!), and numerous comments…Have I mentioned how much I appreciate y’all’s patience?
As you also know I’ve been partaking in TTT during the hiatus to catch up on topics I’ve missed, and this week’s topic hopefully won’t add to your anger (see above).
This week (Top Ten Tuesday #5) I’ll be listing my “Top Ten Books I Feel As Though Everyone Has Read But Me.”
1) Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Okay we’re starting out easy here! Although this is an extremely popular book, it seems to lack the fanatical following that the others on my list possess. Ergo, for survival reasons, it felt appropriate to list this one first. If you’re already judging me, you might want to exit the post here! You have been warned.
2) Cinder by Marissa Meyer
I know, I know. This one is just shameful. Not only due to the fact that the whole series has been completed — for years — but also because I’m self-proclaimed “trash for fairy tale retellings.” I pinky promise this is one the “Read ASAP” list though!
3) Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
I know 3 things about this book: 1) It’s the first in a series, 2) It’s told in a crazy unique format (hacked emails, maps, documents, etc), 3) The book community went INSANE for this. I own it. It will happen…eventually…
4) Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Scroll back to entry #2. Add facepalm.
5) City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
PLEASE don’t unfollow until you hear me out! Or at all preferably! Now I know this series for some of you is what Harry Potter is to me: the boy who lived! the one that started it all! I have every intention of getting around to this, I swear, but when you’re 10+ books, a movie, and a TV show behind it’s hard to catch up.
6) Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
I debated using the new cover art — because yeah, it’s been published for that long — to add insult to injury here, but opted for the one I like more (as you know from my previous post)! Like many of the titles on this list, this has been purchased and will hopefully be checked off soon! #ReaderDreamsVsReaderReality
7) A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
This is one of those books that has everything you need: time-traveling magicians, a pickpocket with a heart of gold (?), and “treachery afoot.” Which might explain why it’s been devoured by the ENTIRE book community sans me. Schwab has become a literary heavy hitter over the past few years and officially has me intrigued.
8) Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
SJM has a “Queen Bee” vibe in the bookish community, and although I read/loved/devoured the ACO-series, I haven’t bent the knee to the Throne. Like the City of Bones series, the idea of starting a saga that’s already 6 books deep — or would be by the time I started this one — is my primary delay.
9) Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
These next two are the ones that are really going to hurt so if you stuck with me, stay strong! From the beautiful cover art to the poetic words inside the book community seems to have been swept away with Strange. Word on the street? This is one of those novels that people cherish every word of. Where they deliberately slow down their reading pace in hopes it will never end. This is precisely why my “super behind in reading challenge/arcs” self cannot yet commit. But in the meantime, I’ll be dreaming about you, Lazlo…
10) Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Outside of HP, I cannot think of a more hyped series that everyone idolizes, names pets/children/houseplants after, or brings shame to non-readers more than the Six of Crows duology. If it brings you any solace, please know that I’m fully aware that this is one of those ones that I’ll be kicking myself for not reading sooner when that fateful day arrives.
Okay, it’s done. The truth is out there. Can we still be friends?
Speaking of friends, would anyone like to buddy read any of these to get these juggernauts off our TBRs? Did I miss any epic titles? Are any of these overblown and should be skipped? Look forward to your thoughts!
As always, happy reading!
I’ve read ONE book from this list. So I’m right there with you!

Oh man! So comforting to know I’m not alone. Which one have you read?

Wow the wedding looked so beautiful!
I have only read a few of these but the one I think is a must read is illuminae! So unique!

Yeah, it was gorgeous! I’ve heard that Illuminae requires the audiobook to truly understand what’s going on — is that accurate?

I read this list and was gasping at these books you haven’t read! 😂😂😂 These are all really great reads! I think I’ve read all of them except Everything Everything.
I agree about Rebel of the Sands cover though. That one is way better than the new cover!

Ha! At least you’re honest! I’veheard great things about all of them, so I plan on hitting them soon!

Well. I mean I guess we can still be friends! 😂 😂
I haven’t read Rebel of the Sands or the darker shades series, but most of the rest are FANTASTIC! Illuminae and Strange the Dreamer are two of my all time favourites! Heartless was just meh. I wasn’t impressed at all

Ha! I hope you can feel my relief! Good to know about Heartless, I’ll save that for later on then!

Some people loved it but I didn’t connect with it at all. There’s still hope that you’ll like it! 🙂

Did you read the Lunar Chronicles? Do you like her writing, but this one particular novel fell flat? I’ve heard mixed reviews on a lot of her works, that’s why I’m asking.

Yes I’ve read the Lunar Chronicles and LOVED IT!!! I didn’t expect to like it either. Her writing is much the same in Heartless. I think I was just expecting more from the plot and the characters. Sadly the characters fell flat and the plot was very repetitive. The reviews are so mixed for this one so deciding if it’s something you’ll like is very difficult

Most of these are great and I hope you pick them up soon! But I totally understand being hesitant to jump into a 5+ book series. I recently did that with all of SJM books (9 books?) Luckily I chose a good time to read it bc if I had tried that during the school yr, and not summer, I might not have made it through them (just bc of lack of time)

Timing issues! Tell me about it! I want to kick myself for not starting this earlier where I could have used the advantage of “summers off.” Oh well! Glad you’re diving into SJM which series are you reading currently?

This summer I’ve read about the same amount that I read in all of last yr! I’m actually done with SJM books! ACOMAF was my favorite 😊

That’s awesome!! Good for you! Yeah, ACOMAF is one of those untouchables.

OH GOSH YOU NEED TO GET ON STRANGE THE DREAMER, ILLUMINAE, THE LUNAR CHRONICLES, AND SIX OF CROWS ASAP!!!! *_*

HA! ALL caps! That added to the anxiety! Lol For real though I know! I’ve got ARCs I need to read that are time sensitive so I’m hoping to knock out some serious reading in the next few weeks so I can get those done and move on to some “classics.”

I’ve ONLY read Throne of Glass! 🙂 But almost all of these are on my TBR because goodness EVERYONE is squealing and chattering about them!
Irony: Cassandra Clare’s “the one that started it all” is also Harry Potter… I remember reading her Draco Dormiens back in the day. XD So BY ASSOCIATION anyone who believes the Shadowhunters started it all can also fall under the HP spinoff umbrella? (Okay, I’m pushing it a little…. :D)

Oh man! So glad to know I’ve got another pal out there in the world that needs to get on this list! And I had NO clue about Clare’s HP spinoffs! I’ll have to look into that stat…adds more to TBR!

They’re… not quite up-to-snuff with her current writing. But I do remember seeing City of Bones get published and going WAIT I KNOW THAT NAME.

BOOM. PDF of the first book.
I tried re-reading it a while ago, and just… no. But I loved it back in 2003-2006-ish!

I’ve read 3/5 of the books on your list so I guess I fared a bit better =). I’ve yet to read any of SJM’s works, but at this point I’m not planning on it. I really missed The Mortal Instruments train, but do want to read the series one day. Awesome post! I just stumbled upon your blog, and I’m greatly enjoying its content.
I’m new to blogging and book reviewing, and I was wondering if you had any tips for newbie bloggers and book reviewers.
If you have the time, please check out my blog @breenysbooks. I’d love any feedback. Have a wonderful day.

I have a hard time reading popular, overhyped books, so I’m with you with most of these books! I really liked ADSOM, so I can recommend it to you. I haven’t read Strange The Dreamer or Cinder or Illuminae, but they are all on my TBR though.

I’ve heard fantastic things about all of V.E.’s books so they’re definitely higher up in this batch…as well as the Lunar Chronicles. Thanks for the rec!
