When Victoria Bradford got engaged, she told herself to give love a chance. Six months later, she’s on the run from her angry, abusive ex-fiancé with her four-year-old daughter and nowhere to go.
Seventy miles north of Dallas, the Iron River Ranch is pretty much nowhere. That’s what its new owner, Josh Cain, wanted when he came back from Afghanistan. Big skies, quiet nights, no trouble.
One look tells Josh the pretty redhead with the adorable little girl will give him trouble of the most personal kind. But he’s seen trouble before, and he doesn’t scare easy. Not when “accidents” start happening around the ranch. Not when Tory’s best friend back in Phoenix is abducted and brutalized. Not even when it looks like their current problems are only the tip of the iceberg. But if he gets too close to fierce, determined Tory, Josh knows his nights are going to be anything but quiet. And that’s one possibility no amount of training can prepare him for…
PRAISE FOR BEYOND CONTROL:
“As the excitement in Iron Springs continues, two strangers with tragic pasts form an unbreakable bond. Beyond Control is the last installment in the Texas Trilogy. It’s delightfully fast-paced, riveting, and amazingly compelling. Martin has outdone herself with unpredictable twists and suspense that will leave readers panting for more. Definitely a must-read for readers who enjoy mystery, thrills, and romance to spice up their life.” – RT Reviews Top Pick
“Bestseller Martin brings her Texas Trilogy … to a hair-raising finish with the gripping tale of a single mother on the run and the Marine veteran who offers her a second chance at happily-ever-after. Martin has a consummate skill for developing the most loveable and the most despicable characters; readers will cheer when sadistic Damon meets his well-deserved end. Martin’s finely described Texas is a delight.” – Publishers Weekly

How has Texas influenced your writing?
I love Texas! Been there a number of times and lived a couple of months in Houston. Great people with all-American values. Those are the kind of heroes and heroines I like to write in my books.
Why did you choose to write Romantic Suspense?
I chose Romantic Suspense because for me it’s the perfect reading combination. A fast-paced mystery/suspense combined with a solid romance and a happy ending. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Where did your love of books, writing, reading, and storytelling come from?
I was a reader from a very early age. Always loved books. When I was young, I went around with stories in my head. Perhaps a way to escape the problems of a difficult childhood. In college, I told stories in my dorm room — I would sometimes have an audience of a dozen people sitting on the floor listening. It seemed only natural to move on to become a writer.
What cultural value do you see in books?
Books open an entire new world. They take you to places you might never visit, give you other peoples’ thoughts, viewpoints, educate you about history, how people lived in the past. For me, books are as necessary as breathing.
How do your books relate to your faith, spiritual practice, or life path?
I think the stories in my books reflect solid moral values. They make a statement about right and wrong, good versus evil, the power of faith to overcome tremendous obstacles.
Did you first experience rejections when submitting this manuscript for publication?
My first novel was rejected by every major publisher in New York. I was frantic, totally depressed. Then the last submission still floating around was accepted. I was on cloud nine. Better yet, they loved the book and made it a lead title for a new line of Historical novels they were starting. It was a great break for me and very helpful to my career.
What made you decide to write a trilogy? Any unexpected hurdles in doing this?
Beyond Control is the third book in my Texas Trilogy. I enjoy writing books that have a family or friend connection. I like that in reading the series you get to know the characters a little better and pull the reader back for more. They’re a little harder to write because you have to link them together, but worth the extra effort.

I am always amazed at how many authors experience repeated rejections at first — and more amazed that the persevere! Thanks for a great post!
