Top Ten Tuesday #27
Happy Tuesday, book nerds!
I apologize in advance for the clickbait, but I want to squash this misconception as soon as possible. Yes, this post is about CATs, but not about the kind you’re envisioning. You see the CATs I’m referring to aren’t felines at all, but rather the books found on my Celebrity Autobiography TBR. You know, CATs…*looks around for understanding and agreement*…shush, I’m sure other people call them that. Anyways, this post was sparked by two things:
-
I wasn’t really feeling this week’s TTT prompt and
-
Over the weekend I saw the new Whitney documentary with my bestie and was BLOWN away by the emotions it evoked and by the things I NEVER knew about her life.
This is one of the only documentaries out there that had access to the family (and the assumed truth). Seeing this movie made me think about the autobiographies sitting on my shelf that have some of my icon’s stories just waiting to be read — in their (or their secret ghostwriter’s) words. So for this week’s round of TOP TEN TUESDAY hosted by Jana at ThatArtsyReaderGirlI’m listing the TOP TEN CELEBRITY AUTOBIOGRAPHIES on my TBR!
1) Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
Notable quote: “Comfort can be dangerous. Comfort provides a floor but also a ceiling.”
2) Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling
Notable quote: “…write your own part. It is the only way I’ve gotten anywhere. It is much harder work, but sometimes you have to take destiny into your own hands. It forces you to think about what your strengths really are, and once you find them, you can showcase them, and no one can stop you.”
*I discovered via searching quotes that her sophomore novel is more quotable, but this is one is more entertaining.*
3) On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King
Notable quote: “Just remember that Dumbo didn’t need the feather; the magic was in him.”
*You could quote this ENTIRE book* Picking one line was simply unfair.
4) The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish
Notable quote: “That’s why I think my life turned out as good as it has. Because all the time, I’m just trying to have fun.”
5) Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology by Leah Remini
Notable quote: “There is no “right” way to be. I am flawed and imperfect, but am uniquely me. I don’t fit in and probably never will. And I don’t have to try to anymore. That other person was a lie. And let’s face it, normal is boring. We all have something to offer the world in some way, but by not being our authentic selves, we are robbing the world of something different, something special.”
6) Home: A Memoir of My Early Years by Julie Andrews Edwards
Notable quote: “Remember: the amateur works until he can get it right. The professional works until he cannot go wrong.”
7) Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun And Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes
Notable quote: “I am not lucky. You know what I am? I am smart, I am talented, I take advantage of the opportunities that come my way and I work really, really hard. Don’t call me lucky. Call me a badass.”
8) Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis & Larry Sloman (Collaborator)
Notable quote: “When you start putting pen to paper, you see a side of your personal truth that doesn’t otherwise reveal itself in conversation or thought.”
9) Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick
Notable quote: “I gave up on being Nice. I started putting more value on other qualities instead: passion, bravery, intelligence, practicality, humor, patience, fairness, sensitivity. Those last three might seem like they are covered by “nice,” but make no mistake, they are not. A person who smiles a lot and remembers everyone’s birthday can turn out to be undercover crazy, a compulsive thief, and boring to boot. I don’t put a lot of stock in nice. I’d prefer to be around people who have any of the above qualities over “niceness,” and I’d prefer it if that applied to me, too.”
10) Failing Up: How to Take Risks, Aim Higher, and Never Stop Learning by Leslie Odom Jr.
Notable quote: “The work you put in when no one is watching will matter far more than the work you do when the cameras are rolling.”
So I definitely veered far from the path this week with my TTT selections, but I hope you enjoyed the post nonetheless! Have you read any of these celebrity autobiographies? Did any MUST READS miss my list?? Let me know below!

AHHH! You are so creative. I love the C.A.T. reference. And excellent list. I need to read more autobiographies, especially Mindy’s.

Aw, you’re too sweet! I’m glad people are supporting the CAT thing and not calling me out for being a cornball! lol
If you’re looking for a funny read go book 1 of Mindy’s. If you’re looking for more of an inspirational read book 2.

What a freaking cool spin on the topic! 😀 I cracked up over the “CATs” explanation. I’ve only read the Trevor Noah one from this list, but I can’t recommend it highly enough. He narrates the audiobook himself and it takes it to the next level. Another one that I loved was Felicia Day’s You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost).

❤ ❤ ❤ Thank you, Destiny! I was so nervous people would be like what the eff is the matter with this girl lol! I've heard from a few sources that the audiobook of Born a Crime is the way to go and I trust that because I'm a fan of his voice. I've heard good things about Felicia's book I just don't know that much about here. Beyond Dr. Horrible that is.

Of course! ♥ Oh yeah, Trevor’s voice is amazing. I honestly just love him to death. Wait until you hear him talk about his mom. You can hear the love and it’s so sweet!
Oh, with Felicia Day, it miiiight not have as much weight if you aren’t familiar with The Guild, the webshow she did!

Yeah, I definitely have a sweet spot for Trevor. And I’ve been told I need to look into The Guild, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’m just about the Dr. H lol

SHUT UP! I know very few people that are even AWARE of Dr. H. When I lived in Australia I was actually in a production of Dr. Horrible. Fond memories!

That’s so cool! My first boyfriend introduced me to it when we were… gosh, 15? 16? And I’ve loved it ever since!

I’d love to read Mindy’s and Trevor’s books. I’ve been eyeing them for awhile. And I didn’t even know King wrote an autobiography!
Love your picks.

Yeah King’s is more a guide to writing, but it’s got backstory and like EVERY LINE is quotable, but that makes sense because it’s King. Thanks for the love and let me know if you end up reading any of those 3.

I’m not a huge King fan (I like his movies more), but I think I really need to read it.
Oh, you’re welcome! 💜

I’m just discovering biographies and loving them – I’ve had my eye on that Stephen King writing one for a while, it sounds so good! Just read a great one about John Lennon by his first wife, Cynthia (which you’d think would be be really biased but was actually dead interesting) and when Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr which I loved, although it’s a kid’s book really 🙂

What a fun idea for a list! I don’t often read celebrity autobiographies but a few of these would probably be super interesting reads! I actually have read the Mindy Kaling one and really enjoyed it so I hope you do as well 🙂 Happy reading!

Yeah, it’s not my go-to genre, but I often find they’re super relatable, quotable, and usually pretty emotional — whether it’s funny or sad is up to the narrator I guess.

On Writing is an INCREDIBLE book, but it’s only half biographical. The other is all about the art of writing. That half is filled with priceless advice for aspiring writers. If you’re interesting in the man AND writing, this is one of the best books on the planet.

You’re making me want to read this even more, J.W.!!! Need to find the time because I’m sure I’m going to want to take my time to truly absorb the advice and the eloquent words within!
